Shawn Corey Carter (nacido el 4 de diciembre de 1969 en Brooklyn, Nueva York), más conocido como Jay-Z o por una variedad de apodos (Jigga, Jay-Hova, Hova, Young Hov, Jigga-Man, P-playa), es un rapero y actual presidente y CEO de Def Jam, propietario del The 40/40 Club, y, además, posee parte de la franquicia New Jersey Nets de la NBA. Ha sido uno de los raperos más prolíficos y exitosos durante el final de la década de los 90 y principios de siglo. Era amigo íntimo del también rapero The Notorious B.I.G. En una lista reciente de la MTV hecha por la audiencia, Jay-Z fue catalogado como el cuarto MC de todos los tiempos, superado por The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur y Rakim. La propia MTV lo cataloga basado en aspectos generales, como el mejor MC de todos los tiempos. Tras su colaboración en el álbum Collision Course junto con Linkin Park en 2004, el propio Jay-Z se ha hecho amigo muy íntimo de Mike Shinoda y Chester Bennington, componentes del grupo en cuestión. Es coronado como el rapero más rico del mundo en una exclusiva lista creada por la revista 'Forbes'. Fue el primero en una lista de los raperos más ricos en el 2010, ingresando más del doble que el artista que obtuvo el segundo lugar, Sean 'P Diddy' Combs. Jay-Z ingresa unos 81 millones de dolares al año, por lo cual se ha convertido en el rapero más rico del mundo, tal y como publicó la prestigiosa revista. Se estima que su fortuna sobrepasa los 450 millones de dolares. Diddy, en el segundo puesto de este ranking, ingresa casi 40 millones anualmente.
Conocido por su hábil empleo de las metáforas, sus capacidades de freestyle, su astuto juego de palabras y la combinación del hip hop callejero con el comercial, Jay-Z se convirtió en uno de los raperos más respetados de la industria antes de su retiro en 2003. Se dice que compone las canciones de memoria, sin necesidad de usar papel y lápiz.
